DOLPHINS WIN, GIANTS WIN, JETS WIN.. .YANKEES.. NOT SO MUCH.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon for football and just being out and about in the city.  The DOLFANS NYC were out in force to cheer on their Dolphins while the Sunday Brew Crew held court in usual spot, better known as "The Corner".   Both parties enjoyed a great afternoon of victorious football for the Dolphins, Giants and Jets.  Which brings me to an interesting observation.

While it's been great to have the DolfansNYC on board at Third and Long and enjoy their zest and spirit when their team does well, I can't help but to be a bit put off when I hear some members of the club telling people to "get the f*** out, this is our bar"!  Especially to some of the Third and Long regulars, many of them who have been coming to the bar for years and were more than accommodating to the original DolfansNYC when they first started coming here.  And if memory serves me correct, part of the reason for coming here, was to be able to enjoy watching the Dolphins without being abused; And aside from the playful banter from time to time, you've been able to do that.  But now as the group grows larger in stature, you'll find a few "bad apples" that may taint the rest of the group and my fear is that you become the very thing you wanted to avoid.  Being known as "that group".  And we don't want to see that happen.  You guys, as a whole, are great, with wonderful, unique personalities that makes the DolfansNYC group stand out among others.

Look, we enjoy Sunday Football with the DolfansNYC and the playful banter between everyone adds to the enjoyment.  Let's just remember that it's fun times and football and that everyone should be able to enjoy both and co-exist peacefully.

As for the NY Yankees and their fans.... The playoffs began last week with Baltimore and I was surprised to see the "lack of enthusiasm" from Yankee fans about the playoffs and that particular series.  Maybe they were looking ahead to the next round?  Now the next round is here and they are up against Detroit and yet the same lackluster spirit still exists.  And add to that, the loss of Derek Jeter in Game 1 and it seems as if the air has been let out of the Yankee float.  Did NY Yankee fans jump ship?  It's still a bit early to tell, but it sure seems so.  Let's see what Game 3 brings to us on Tuesday, but if you ask me, I think the Yankee float has sailed into the sunset.  Hopefully Yankee fans will prove me wrong.   Stay tuned...

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

It was a bad night for NY sports teams as three out of the four teams in action lost. The NYY, still trying to adjust to life without #42, blew a save and a win against Tampa Bay.  The NY Knicks played "Dead Man Walking"  against the Miami Heat, seemingly resigned to the fact that they weren't going to win their series and happy with just winning a game.  Then there were the NY Rangers.

All they needed to do was to close out the Washington Capitals and they would punch a ticket to the Eastern Conference Finals against the rival NJ Devils.  Perhaps they were looking ahead to the next series?  They sure played like it as they were as flat as a pancake for pretty much the whole game.  The Caps struck early and kept the pressure on the Rangers throughout the game, and the Blueshirts had no answer for them.  And now, instead of preparing for Game 1 vs New Jersey, they find themselves rolling the dice again in another do-or-die Game 7.

They got lucky with the Game 7 in the last round.  Will Lady Luck be on their side this time around?  Stay tuned this Saturday night (7:30pm), and you'll get your answer.

At least the NY Mets had something to cheer about.  They swept the Phillies- on the road!  Nice job boys!

WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS

Looking back over the past weekend, it's fairly obvious that the biggest highlight had to have been Derek Jeter and his quest for the elusive 3,000 Hit Club (at least on the local level).  He achieved that mark on Saturday, much to the delight of NY Yankee fans who made the game that day.  And he did it in grand style: Going 5-5 for the day, and getting the magic 3,000th hit via an unlikely home run to left field.  Talk about an epic performance!

There was also a lot of buzz generated by the lucky fan who caught the home run ball.  Speculation ran rampant that whoever caught the lucky 3,000th hit ball could command anywhere from $100,000 to $400,000 or even more for the ball.  However, the fan did what many are calling a classy gesture:  He gave the ball back to Jeter for free.  The team, responding to the nice gesture, did one of its own: They gave him great seats for every home game for the rest of the season AND playoffs, along with autographed stuff from the Captain himself.  You couldn't have scripted a better story.

Then there was the other big story of the weekend: The U.S. Women's Soccer Team's improbable comeback victory over Brazil in the World Cup quarterfinals.  The match was marred by crappy refereeing which had HUGE ramifications on the match itself.  At one point, thanks to a bad call by the ref, Team USA found itself down one woman against a feisty Brazilian team.  Then to make matters worse, Brazil was awarded a penalty kick for the same infraction, which Team USA initially stopped.  Amidst the celebration of the stop, the referee waived off the save and gave Brazil another try, which they made, tying the score at 1-1.  Brazil then took the lead in extra time, thanks to a goal scored which should have been waived off due to offsides.





To add insult to injury, the Brazilian players kept diving and pulling stall tactics that enraged the fans in the stands.  This, however, ended up being their undoing as Team USA were able to somehow overcome all of their antics by scoring an improbable last-second header to send the game to the penalty shot phase.  Team USA scored on all of their penalties while Brazil missed two of five shots, thus giving Team USA the miracle victory.  Quite easily one of the most thrilling soccer matches ever played, by male or female.

It certainly was an "epic" weekend if you're a sports fan.

YANKEES 13, BOSOX 6. OUCH.

Last night was dominated by a capacity crowd there to watch the "Big Series" between the Boston Red Sox and the NY Yankees. Whenever these two teams play there's always electricity in the air and last night was no exception.

The Red Sox dominated the season series up to this point, winning every game they played so far. However, coming into last night's game, the Yankees had been playing great baseball while the BoSox were struggling a bit. Last night's game was a total slugfest and a joy to watch... if you were a fan of the Bronx Bombers. They hammered starter John Smoltz (why is he still pitching?) and the arch-rivals 13-6 to win for the first time this season, much to the delight of the Yankee fans at the bar. It was a long game (as Yankee/Red Sox games tend to be) but it was good for us as it kept folks at the bar. And it always intrigues me how many "fair weather" fans come out when this series takes place.

A quick note on Wednesday's KOPPARBERG promo. I was disappointed with the model that they sent us; she clearly didn't meet the standards of the models KOPPARBERG sent the first time around. I think I said to someone that it was the equivalent of expecting Giselle Bundchen and getting Julia Childs instead.

JOHN CUSACK made an appearance at the bar and yes, he's officially back in the neighborhood. He's currently taking applications for a new wing man....

UFC 101 takes place this Saturday night and of course, we'll host the event, LIVE! The matches take place at 10 pm so make sure to get there early because we fill up quickly and you might get shut out. Don't say I didn't warn you!

GAME 1: RANGERS...

Last night we hosted a viewing party for the NHL Playoffs and the NY Rangers/Washington Capitals were the main event of the evening. We had a great crowd for the event and what was surprising about the event was the number of Caps fans in attendance for the game. The bar was practically a sea of red and white and if you were a Rangers fan, you had to feel slightly embarrassed by the lack of support for the hometown Blueshirts. There were also a few fans on hand for the New Jersey Devils (who defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in their first game).



The Rangers/Caps game was pretty exciting with the teams trading goals back and forth throughout until the very end when the Blueshirts were able to hold off a fierce attempted comeback by the home team to steal a 4-3 road victory and take a 1-0 lead in the series. This game was so intense that there were some disgruntled Caps fans who decided to take matters into their own hands and attack a NY Rangers fan after the game (they got tossed out of the bar like yesterday's garbage). If this is happening after only one game, then it's safe to say that this is going to be one intense series! Game 2 takes place Saturday afternoon at 1pm. Of course, we'll be here to carry it live! NY YANKEES HOME OPENER

The pinstripes will finally open their doors to the new stadium today for their official grand opening against my Cleveland Indians at 1pm this afternoon. There will be a lot of pomp and circumstance with many former Yankees expected to attend. Yogi Berra is slated to throw the first pitch, while American Idol's Kelly Clarkson will sing the National Anthem. Should be fun.

TONIGHT: "Bucket o'Lights" Night (5-10pm), featuring $15.00 buckets of Miller Lite, Michelob Light or Coors Light! We also have $4.00 Molson Canadian drafts in honor of the NHL Playoffs!
