This kind of thing would only happen in my neck of the city. I wake up this morning and after taking care of a few work-related calls and issues, I open my window to get a sense of what the weather would be. (It was already hot and muggy). Everything looked normal otherwise, so I jumped into the shower and when I came out, I get back to the bedroom only to notice a fire truck parked across the street. So I go to the window to see what happened and.... whoa! The tree in front of the apartment building directly across from me had toppled over for no apparent reason. There were no signs that a vehicle had hit it or anything like that. It simply fell over.
The FDNY were called in and they had to shut down East 35th Street while they dismantled the fallen tree. I don't think anyone got hurt. Still, talk about freaky....
On another note, while we were watching the the FDNY do their work, we think we may have had a minor celebrity sighting: ROSE LESLIE, who played the character Ygritte, the mountain wilding from the hit TV series, Game of Thrones. She was casually walking by the bar with a couple of her friends and she definitely look cute. And definitely a redhead (my personal fav)!
The LONDON OLYMPICS are a few days away and I'm FINALLY starting to get into the mood for the event. In years past, I'd be stoked for everything related to the Games, from the opening ceremonies, to the most obscure events. But for some reason, I haven't caught the Olympic bug yet. Maybe it's the lack of advertising of this year's Games (or maybe I'm just missing it)? Who knows, I'm just not feeling it so far.
In any case, I'm looking forward to the Women's Marathon, of all things, as we know a young lady (Des Davila) who has a pretty good shot of medaling in the event. I think she's scheduled to run on Sunday, August 5, so if you're up early and watching the Olympics on that day, make sure to pull for her!
TONIGHT: Enjoy quality craft beers from brewers like LAGUNITAS, HARPOON, LONG TRAIL, MAGIC HAT, & SHIPYARD for only $3/pint during "CRAFT BREW TUESDAYS" (5pm -close)! And while you're here, catch Team USA's last tune-up basketball game vs Spain (4:30pm)! Should be interesting as both teams are already shit-talking each other, and the Olympics haven't even started yet!
Cheers!
Follow the daily interactions of an affable bar manager of pretty cool and not-so-typical watering hole in NYC, in a not-so-typical neighborhood, Murray Hill. There may be some blurbs overheard at the bar, stimulating observations and random thoughts on random things. So be careful, you never know what might end up here....Enjoy and welcome to my world!

THIRD and LONG'S ATHLETE OF THE OLYMPICS
With the Summer Olympics winding down, it's time for me to step up and name my favorite athlete of this year's Olympic Games. The easy guess would be superstar MICHAEL PHELPS for his eight gold medals. Yeah, that would be too easy.
Instead, I'm going to give Third and Long's Athlete of the Olympic Games to someone else. Someone who was favored to win their event but due to a tragic set of circumstances, lost their event, yet was gracious in defeat, being the perfect symbol of what the good sport should be.

You've probably heard her story by now- heavy favorite to win the Women's 110 meter hurdles. Sprints out to a big lead, looking all but set to win the race...... until her feet clips the 9th of 10 hurdles, thus throwing her off of her stride. That was enough to cause her to lose her lead, and ultimately the race.
Now anyone else could have pissed and moaned about what happened. Blame the shoes, blame the hurdles, blame the snapping of the cameras, etc. But in this case, LOLO JONES didn't. She was momentarily stunned by what happened, and naturally upset. But she picked herself up, congratulated the winners and held her head up high.
She accepted defeat with class and grace. And in doing that, represented her country well.
And on top of that, she's smoking hot! Truth be told, that was a slight factor too.
In any case, she's my Third and Long Athlete of the Olympic Games. Bless her heart.

8-8-08: LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!
After years of planning and training, the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics finally began today. With 8-8-08 being the special starting date (the number "8" symbolizing "good fortune" in Chinese lore), the expectations are high for a good session of competition over the next few weeks. Team USA, as always, is expected to yield a large number of medals. The one thing that will take a bit of getting used to, however is the time-difference between here and China. If you want to catch any of the "live" sporting events, you'll have to set your clocks to 2am and stay up all night long. Reminds me of the World Cup a few years back when fans were banging down our doors to catch live matches at 5am!
In any case, Third and Long will commemorate the opening of the Beijing Olympics by kicking off 24-hours worth of drink specials (8+8+08= 24, get it?), beginning at 12 noon. So at any point during the next 24 hours, there will be a drink special of some type going on, from $3.00 pints, to $4.00 mixed drinks, to a few surprises in between. You can count on more than your fair share of giveaways as well, so come on in and help celebrate the launch of the Olympics!
KEEP IN MIND:
Saturday night will be the last night that we're open before shutting down for a few weeks worth of "cosmetic updates" (i.e. renovations). Swing by and have a few cold ones with me before we put on our construction gear. We should be open again by the end of August. Sorry for the inconvenience but at the end of the day, it will be worth it.
Last night was BLONDE CHATTERBOX'S going away party and it was one for the ages. Too long to mention in this post- you'll get the full report later this afternoon. One thing I can say: A good time was had by all!

WHAT'S NEW THIS WEEK.....
This is the last week that we'll be open before we take a "hiatus" for a couple of weeks for some "cosmetic touch-ups" to the bar. We haven't done anything of note with the place since the last set of renovations in 2000, so it's long overdue. We should be back up and running before the end of the month, so keep in touch via the blog for updates.
That being said, here's what's going this week:
TONIGHT: Mug Night Madness (4pm-close). With $2.00 Domestic mugs and $1.00 Bud/Bud Light mugs, tonight is the night to have some fun while giving your wallet a bit of a break after your spending frenzy at the Jersey Shore this past weekend.
TUESDAY: Dollar Draft Madness (4pm-close). With $1.00 Bud/Bud Light mugs flowing all night long, here's your chance to put those leftover singles from Mug Night Madness to use. A lot of the interns are wrapping up this week so I expect a full house. Get there early.
WEDNESDAY: Ladies Night (5pm-close). This night is for the girls of the neighborhood. $3.00 mixed well drinks for you and $1.00 off all imported beers for everyone in the house! And we'll throw in $5.00 Cosmos/Appletinis to boot.

THURSDAY: "Bucket 'o Lights"(5pm-10pm). This is for all of the bottled beer lovers in the house, with buckets of Miller Lite, Coors Light or Michelob Light, 5/$15.00! On top of that- it's a going-away party for our own BLONDE CHATTERBOX! We celebrate her many years of service as she makes the big move to the West Coast. Should be one hell of a party (if she has anything to say about it)!
FRIDAY (8-8-08): IT'S THAT SPECIAL DAY! 8-8-08 is one of those rare days on the calendar where the numbers match up. It's usually a sign of good luck and with the Summer Olympics starting on that day, our hopes are with Team USA! To celebrate the day, we are putting forth 24 hours worth of drink specials and give aways, beginning at 12 noon! Make sure you stop by for a full day of fun!
SATURDAY: Closing Night! The last night before we temporally shut down. You can expect more specials and giveaways so I expect to see you there!
That's it for now; I'm holding down the fort at the bar this afternoon, so you probably won't get another update until tomorrow. Until then....... Hasta la Pasta!
