WEEKEND RECAP (long post)

This past weekend was one of those strange ones where it started out like a lamb and ended with the roar of a lion (or in this case, Steeler fans).

If you recall, we experienced a rather nasty arctic blast on Thursday and Friday and it really did a number on business up and down Third Avenue. Folks didn't want to deal with the brutal temps and quite frankly, I didn't blame them. Why go out and endure the torture of trying to hail down a cab or dealing with that frigid walk to the subway when you can just as easily cozy up with someone in a warm apartment, drinking bad wine and watching videos? So there's nothing much to report for those nights as there was simply not much to talk about.

Saturday afternoon brought about an interesting turn of events. I called the bar to check in on the day bartender and to give him some tasks to take care of before I got there. It was at this point where we got our "Celebrity Spotting of the Week". In the midst of our brief conversation, he casually mentioned to me what I thought was "Hey, there's a guy here who looks like Bill Cowher" (former NFL coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers). I laughed it off and went on with my list. About an hour later, I show up at the bar to check in on things and noticed a group of girls, sitting in the back of the bar watching hockey. As it turns out, it really was "The Chin" himself. He was there to meet up with his daughter and her friends and watch a L.A. Kings game (apparently his daughter is dating a member of the Kings hockey team). He hung out for about an hour or so before having to jet off to do his CBS thing. Apparently a nice guy.

Later in the evening we got a visit from a rowdy rugby team from Boston College who seemed pretty happy with partaking in the "Kick the Keg" special. Eventually they were encouraged to leave after getting a bit "too rowdy" and almost causing some havoc. The rest of the night was pretty low-key as I was in bed by 9pm (gotta catch up on my sleep somehow).

I was looking forward to Sunday afternoon because it was CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY, which meant that there were only THREE football games left before the official football season (and Sunday Fundays with the BREW CREW) ended. There were two big matchups on tap for the afternoon: The first game featured Arizona vs Philadelphia and the early afternoon brought about a lot of Eagles fans, ready to celebrate a victory and a trip to the Super Bowl.

And among those Eagles fans were a smattering of Arizona Cardinal faithful, hoping against hope for an improbable victory.

When the game began and the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, the Cardinals' fans were cautiously optimistic. As the lead grew, so did their voices and confidence. By halftime, they were yelling, screaming and bouncing their bosoms, much to the delight from the male patrons of the bar.

By halftime, the Cardinals held a commanding lead and the Eagles fans had much to be worried about.

But there's two halves in football and the second half was all Eagles as they mounted a furious comeback and made the game an exciting and tense one. As a matter of fact, it came down to one final play to determine who would move on to the Super Bowl and who would go home. And in this case, it would be the underdog Cardinals who would pull off the improbable upset, much to the delight of the female Cardinal fans. And to show everyone how happy they were about the win, they gave everyone a treat.....

Lovely indeed.

Ah... and then there was the second game, featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers vs the Baltimore Ravens. There was a lot of hype going into this game and STEELER NATION finally showed up to support their team, after having their home taken over by the Miami Dolphins cult this season.

Truth be told, the second game was pretty boring compared to the first game and aside from a few sparks here or there by the Ravens, the favored Steelers pretty much did what was expected and dispatched their rivals, earning a 7th trip to the Super Bowl, much to the delight of their hardcore fans.

So we're set for SUPER BOWL XLIII in two weeks. Arizona vs Pittsburgh. Kinda has a nice ring to it. In the meantime, we have two weeks to kill. Can you say NHL?

One quick note: In my many years of bringing the fun to the people here at Third and Long, I get to meet a lot of people. Especially during football season, you come across many types, ranging from the hardcore football fan to the casual bandwagon rider, the majority of them males. It's not very often that you come across a cool female football fan. And when you do, you appreciate them, much like a fat kid who loves cake. That being said, I would like to officially introduce everyone to MISS VICKI.....

the PERFECT female football fan....

Okay so what makes her stand out from any other female "football fan"? She's hot (without being a snot about it); she loves football and more importantly, KNOWS football, which is great. Nothing more annoying than always having to explain everything. She's a "guy's girl" in that you can be yourself and not have to worry about her saying "ewwwww" or calling you a pig if you do something disgusting. Most importantly, she's LOW MAINTENANCE. Meaning that you don't always have to worry about her; she's perfectly content with either hanging out with the boys, chillin with her girlfriends, reading the Sunday Times or my blog, talking to strangers, and you not having to worry about constantly checking up on her. And as an added bonus: She hooks up the guys with great grub, whether it be snacks or a full tailgate spread.

What more could one want in a female football fan? Someone like that comes along once in a blue moon, so when you come across one, you enjoy it as much as possible. Kudos to CANDEE MAN for bringing her around. A good catch, my man!

Overall, a pretty fun day if I do say so myself. I look forward to the Super Bowl in two weeks! Check out the rest of the pics from Championship Sunday on our FACEBOOK page!

TOMORROW: Inauguration Day. Dollar Draft Madness. Should be one interesting day!
