PART 2: BREW CREW SUNDAY

SUNDAY morning was met with a lot of anticipation as it was the grand opening of the NFL Sunday Funday season, better known as Brew Crew Sundays. The bar staff began prepping the bar at around 11am and it wasn't even 15 minutes before the first of what would be many NYC DOLFANS showed up. As the "OFFICIAL" bar of the Miami Dolphins fans of NYC, we had been receiving a lot of calls about game day so I knew we would have a packed house. But I didn't realize that they would begin arriving so early. We even got a couple of DOLFANS members who flew in from Germany (more on them later).

That didn't deter the regular members of the Sunday Brew Crew as they got there early enough to mark off their area and reserve their chairs. In anticipation of the day, I did something that caught some folks by surprise: I passed along the torch of manning Brew Crew Sundays to BABY GIRL and CHELSEA LATELY, thus breaking a streak of 15 years of running the show behind the stick. With the increasing number of young patrons coming in for Sunday football, I felt it was time to inject some new blood behind the stick. You gotta roll with the times. And while I will still be around for the antics of the day, I will get a chance to move about the bar, making sure everything is running smoothly and everyone is having a good time. That being said, I was confident that the girls could handle the task at hand and sure enough, they proved me right and for that, I was pleased.

The bar filled up quickly, so much so that I actually had to start a line outside the bar. While that was going on, I couldn't help but notice a young lady standing outside the bar, passing out fliers.

As it turned out, she was dispatched by another bar from another part of town, to try and steal Dolphins fans away from our place. While I don't mind some healthy competition between bars, you don't stand in front of your competition and pass out fliers. That's just bush league, an unwritten no-no. I guess when you got a good thing going, sooner or later, copycats are going to try and jump on the bandwagon. Pretty weak. The NYC DOLFANS members took the young lady to task and soon afterwards the flyer girl took off, realizing that her efforts were fruitless.

In any case, by kickoff time, the place was filled to the brim with football fans, raring for the games to begin.

Then there was our friend SEAN JEAN, who had to face the music for his puking display last week at the bar. The price of his penance? He had to wear a bucket around his neck for the afternoon and he had to proclaim the colors of the Miami Dolphins for the day. Bless his heart...

The games turned out to be to be good ones and the crowd were totally into all of the action. At one point during the afternoon, the local CBS affiliate, which had been airing the CINCINNATI/NEW ENGLAND game, switched out of that feed and onto the feed of another game. The visiting German guys (who were one of the first to arrive, mind you) all of a sudden began freaking out, screaming at me to put the game back on. I, in turn, ended up screaming back at them, telling them to relax, which I think surprised them. I then calmly found the game on another feed and pointed at the TV. The German tourists later apologized for their outburst, explaining that they came all this way from Germany to watch the games at Third and Long and to go to a Jets game. I told them not to worry about it and that I understood their enthusiasm.

The Dolphins ended up winning their game, much to the delight of their fans.

It was definitely a good day and a great start to the weekend!

And just when you thought things would settle down after a hectic afternoon, we still had the night game to play. Dallas vs Washington, a classic matchup and I ended up dealing with a group of Brits and a very, VERY loud Redskins fan. Great. Add to the mix some leftover drunken Dolphins fans and that added up to a surreal evening. The Brits and the Redskin fan in particular, decided to have a contest to see who could out yell each other, much to the chagrin of yours truly. At one point I thought the Brits were going to pound Mr. Redskin Fan into the ground, but by the end of the game, it became a total lovefest.

The NFL would love this.
