UFC 91: A ROUSING SUCCESS....

We hosted the latest UFC PPV event on Saturday night: UFC 91, featuring the legendary RANDY COUTURE (so that's what they tell me) and former WWF star, BROCK LESNAR.

The last time we hosted a UFC ppv event, we didn't quite get the turnout we were hoping for, due to monsoon-like rains that fell throughout the day of the event. And with rain in the forecast again on Saturday, I couldn't help but to feel a bit nervous. As it turned out, a little rain didn't damper the spirits of UFC fans as the bar filled up pretty quickly, in anticipation of a night of hardcore MMA action.

And while things did get a bit "sticky" during the fight, most folks dealt with the warmth of the room by sucking down ice cold beers at a rapid pace. Most importantly, everyone got along famously which was another concern of mine. A bunch of rabid UFC fans in one hot room could easily mean trouble, but it all worked out in the end and everyone had a pretty good time.

I've been trying to catch up with my TV viewing of late and while it hasn't always been a success, I can say THANK GOD FOR DVR! So at the very least, I can catch up on my shows on my time and not feel crushed for missing first-run episodes.

That being said, here's my current Top Five TV shows to watch:

1) TRUE BLOOD (HBO, Sunday Night). HBO has a hit on its hands with the blood-thirsty, sometimes bizarre, strangely erotic drama, featuring an unforgettable cast of characters. Probably the best series HBO's put out since a certain Italian family from Jersey.

2) SKINS (BBC America, Sunday Night). A Brit-hit teenage coming of age comedy series about a group of friends trying to find their way in the world.

3) BROTHERHOOD (Showtime, Sunday Night). I wrote about this series a while back; based on a true story about a family in New England (Providence, R.I.) whose loyalties straddle between public service and the Mob.

4) GAVIN and STACEY (BBC America, Tuesday Night). A quaint little comedy that follows the trials and tribulations of a guy and a girl who met and fell in love. It follows them from the day they met, up until their wedding day and thereafter. Hilarious.

5) THE SHIELD (FX, Tuesday Night). This long-running, gritty police drama is wrapping up its final season and it's going out with a bang. Hardcore stuff, this show made envelope-pushing NYPD Blue look like the Boy Scouts. This show will be missed.

If you haven't done so yet, make sure you check them out and give me your thoughts on what you see. I can almost guarantee you that you'll like what you see.

NEWSFLASH: As a result of the resent rash of job layoffs across the different industries that make NYC great, we've decided to re-name "Mug Night Madness" to a more appropriate one. Something befitting the sign of the times. So as of now, Mondays will be known as "RECESSION MONDAYS", featuring $1.00 Bud/Bud Light and Coors/Coors Light mugs AND $2.00 Domestic Draft mugs, ALL NIGHT LONG!

DON'T FORGET: We're still taking donations for Prostate Cancer Research by growing mustaches for the cause! If you want to make a tax-deductible donation, simply click HERE! Any amount appreciated!

"MO-VEMBER UPDATE"

We're at the two week mark of Movember and now is as good a time as any to show you the update:
The SWANFATHER with a couple of "Mo-Vember" supporters....

As you can see, the "MO" is runnin' wild, ready to be tamed. At this point, I'm thinking about going with the "Otis Sistrunk" look, shaved head and all (he was a famous defensive lineman with the Oakland Raiders, back in the '70's).

With the charity fundraising reaching the halfway point, I'm proud to say that our group, "The Third And Long's Swashbuckling Mustacheros " has raised $980.00 to this point. While I'm thrilled with what we've done so far, there's so much more we can raise, with your help. Again, any amount will do, whether it be $1.00, $5.00, $10.00, etc. All of you have been very generous with your donations and it is much appreciated. I thank you and the Prostate Cancer Foundation thanks you.

If you haven't done so yet, you can make your tax-deductible donation HERE.

MOVEMBER UPDATE

Just wanted to give you guys an update on our month-long fundraiser for Prostate Cancer; the promotion is called "MOVEMBER- A Month to Remember".

Just to refresh your memory, During Movember (the month formerly known as November) our group are growing Moustaches. That's right we're bringing the Mo back because as male patrons of Third and Long, while we're always about having a great time, we're also passionate about tackling men's health issues and being proactive in the fight against prostate cancer.

The Task:
November is 30 days long. That means 30 days of growing, styling, fundraising and embracing the moustache. The group (MR. TANQUERAY, DALE EARNHARDT, JR, STIFFLER, OPIE CUNNINGHAM, DIRTY SANCHEZ, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE and myself) started the month clean shaven and we're attempting to make the magic of the moustache happen. All for Prostate Cancer Research. Our newfound motto: "Go in with an open mind - remember you don't choose the moustache, it chooses you".

So while we're doing our part for charity, we need your help by way of a donation towards the cause. To this point, we're a week into the fundraising and as a group, we've already raised $790.00! Thanks to everyone who already donated to the cause! While that's a great total for one week, we have a long way to go, so feel free to donate ANY amount that you're comfortable with. Whether it be $5, $10, $20, whatever floats your boat, it would be much appreciated.

I'll provide everyone with weekly updates on our fundraising efforts. To make a donation in my name, simply click HERE and follow the easy-to-follow directions. Or if you want to donate in the name of any of my colleagues, just contact them and they will be happy to help you to make your donation possible.

On behalf of my hairy-faced comrades, we thank you in advance for your support! Make me proud!

MO-VEMBER: a month to remember!

The other day, MR. TANQUERAY approached some of the folks at the bar about banding together for a noble cause: PROSTATE CANCER. There's this charity event called MOVEMBER (Moustache for November), where participants grow a moustache for the month of November and the monies raised from tax-deductible donations going directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

That's right we're bringing the Mo back because we are passionate about tackling men's health issues and being proactive in the fight against prostate cancer. So far the participants include:

MR. TANQUERAY
DALE EARNHARDT, JR.
OPIE CUNNINGHAM
DIRTY SANCHEZ
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE
STIFFLER
and....

THE SWANFATHER

To donate to my Mo you can either:

  1. Click this link https://www.movember.com/us/donate/donate-details.php?action=sponsorlink&rego=1777676&country=us and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account, or
  2. Write a check payable to the ‘Prostate Cancer Foundation', referencing my Registration Number 1777676 and mailing it to:

Prostate Cancer Foundation
Attn: Movember
1250 Fourth St
Santa Monica, CA, 90401

All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

The money raised by Movember is donated directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation which will use the funds for high-impact research to find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer.

Did you know:

  • Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the US with one in six American men developing the disease and more than 28,000 men dying of the disease every year.
  • African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer are twice as likely to develop the disease and should have regular annual testing starting at 45. All other men should commence testing at 50.
  • Prostate cancer is 90% curable if detected and treated early.

For those that have supported Movember in previous years you can be very proud of the impact it has had and can check out the details at:
[ Fundraising Outcomes ]
.

So if you see us walking around with weird looking moustaches, know that it's for a good cause. What would be even better is you making a donation to the cause after you get a good laugh out of it. Any amount will suffice as it will be going towards a great cause.

Oh, and if the spirit of giving doesn't move you, the thought of me being the only guy on the list not getting any donations should! Don't let me be THAT GUY!
