FRIDAY THE 13th..... UGH.

It's that dreaded day again, the one that's always associated with bad luck and black clouds, etc. I think I may have talked about it previously, but I still don't get why people get so worked up over this date. It's just another day. Maybe it's because of the number (13), which always has negative, unlucky connotations to it. There is even a phobia for it (paraskavedekatriaphobia= The Fear of Friday the Thirteenth, a form of triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number thirteen.). It's such a unique phenomenon that many businesses and offices experience a production drop or a sharp drop in business on that day because people avoid going to work. I shit you not. Very strange thing indeed.

That being said, I find it surprising and interesting, the number of people that are getting married today. I know a lot of people like to get married on a Friday because it's cheaper than on the weekend, however, on the 13th?? I wonder how those marriages will turn out. Stay tuned.... and watch out for black cats and stay away from walking under ladders!

*We've already gotten our first submissions for the Third and Long Wall of Fame. Check it out (link available in the "Links" column to the right). Remember, the pics can be of you from the bar, or of you from any part of the world, either wearing something related to Third and Long or a sign or something with Third and Long on it. You could be in Fairbanks, Alaska, Rome, Italy or South America for all I care. As long as it's you! Keep 'em coming! (AND BY THE WAY- THE LINK IS NOW WORKING...)

*Celebrity Sighting of the Day: We got a visit from TOM WESTMAN. Who is he you ask? He was the FDNY fireman who won SURVIVOR: PALAU a couple of years ago. He was hanging out with a group of co-workers, kicking back with a few beers. Now retired from the FDNY, I hear that he's a motivational speaker these days, while resting on his million-dollar pile of cash winnings.

*Last night was a mix of corporate types, summer interns and the odd duck here and there. There were a lot of frat boy behavior (to be expected in this neighborhood), but overall, it was a pretty tame night. I have to say, however, that the trend of really hot chicks floating around the Avenue continues. I'm surprised that I don't have whiplash these days with all of the neck-stretching that I do these days. Damn.

*Speaking of "Odd Ducks", the Manhole-Cover Guy made another appearance last night. And like clockwork, he set about handling his business on East 35th Street, dropping pieces of food and liquids on all of the steaming manhole covers on the street. Talk about a strange obsession. I don't know what's stranger, his fascination with the manhole covers or my fascination with his fascination with those covers. It's pretty extreme, even for NYC standards.

*Then there was the woman who stopped in to "use the ladies room". An older woman who dressed as if she was 20 years younger (with the god-awful stretch pants that I hate), she had "weirdo" written all over her. She went to the bathroom and simply disappeared. To be honest, I'd totally forgotten about her until one of the patrons came up to me and said there was something strange going on in the ladies room. So while I was about to go and investigate the situation, the woman re-appeared and the patron gave me a nudge and said that she was the one she was referring to. The woman walked outside and began chatting up another patron who was smoking a cigarette. No big deal, until I noticed that she had something weird going on with her knuckles. It was caked with some white substance. At first I thought it might have been coke residue (which would have explained her disappearance); but upon further, closer review, it turned out that it wasn't coke, but WARTS! UGH!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me???? That was just plain nasty. Throw some gloves on or something....

It was one of those nights.....

Neck straining, tripping on curbs, walking into walls, I know the feeling all too well.
