JOB WELL DONE!
The FORD IRONMAN LAKE PLACID took place yesterday in Lake Placid, NY, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics. This event is second-oldest Ironman Triathlon in North America (behind the Suburu Ironman Canada) and attracts the best of the best in its competition. That being said, this was a huge step in the comeback process for our dear friend, MATT LONG. After completing the NYC Marathon back in November, to him, this was the next step in his comeback from his tragic accident 4 1/2 years ago. To complete a Triathlon. And not just any triathlon, but the IRONMAN in Lake Placid.
To get the gist of what he was up against, here are the particulars of the Lake Placid Ironman:

112 mile bike ride
Followed by a 26.2 FULL MARATHON!
Participants had up to 17 hours to complete this race and I am proud to say that our friend MATT completed the full race (a feat within itself) in 16h/58m/6s, just under the deadline! I'm in awe of what this guy can do and want to say that I'm proud of him and what he's been able to accomplish. Simply unbelievable!

WELL DONE MATT!

I volunteered for the Lake Placid Ironman, my first ever. I was in the motorcycle crew which ran officials and medical personnel around the bike & marathon courses. My friend Kelley Philbin competed in the event and I was lucky enough to be there when she crossed the finish line. How proud of her I am! We stayed until the very end...the crowd chanted "Matt, Matt, Matt" when it was announced that he was 2 miles out with about 20 minutes left and that he could hear us. Matt entered the oval to thunderous applause...he crossed the finish line with a little over a minute to go as we all screamed & applauded. Overcome with emotion, I then did the only thing that I could do..............I cried.
What else can you say? That's simply awesome! Congrats to Kelly as well!
I had the honor of sharing the race course with Matt...watching him cross the finish line was, without a doubt, one of the most exciting moments in sports I've ever witnessed(Boston Red Sox kicking Yankee ass in the world series ranks a close second!)
My wife captured some awesome video of Matt finishing... check it out..
