Weekend Recap (11/12-11/14/10- LONG POST)

The past weekend was another long haul for yours truly as I found myself holding down the fort for the full three days.  While working a full weekend can take its toll on a guy, it does produce some interesting highlights.

FRIDAY:  It was one of those weird nights where the bar wasn't exactly what you would call packed but it was steady enough that it wasn't boring.  A couple of things stood out from the night.  First there was this older woman, who walked in with a cane. She flew solo, made her way to the bar, climbed up on a stool (she was rather short) and placed her cane on the bar.  She was by far the oldest person sitting at the bar but didn't seem to mind it, as long as her drink was fresh and nobody bothered her.  After awhile, the bar got busy and she disappeared for awhile.  An hour or so later, I see her walk out to the street to hail a cab.  I look at her and wonder to myself, "What's different about her?".  As she jumped into the cab and drove off, I realized that she didn't have her cane with her.  Now the bar is the proud owner of a pretty funky looking leopard print cane.

Not long after this, there was this group of three, sitting at the table nearest to the front door.  A white guy, a black guy and a white chick.  I describe them as such because they kinda reminded me of the "Mod Squad", except in a drunker, shadier way. They more or less kept to themselves, except for Linc, the black guy, who made it a point to try and hit on anything that wasn't nailed down.  While he didn't get to the point where I had to step in, I definitely kept my eye on them.

Eventually the group left, but not without incident.  While they were trying to hail a cab, the white guy, sitting on someone's car hood, was talking to the girl of the group when a cab pulled up.  The black guy then went to give his friend a hug; however, not realizing how drunk he was, he ended up diving on top of his buddy and the both of them ended up sliding off the hood of the car and landed on top of each other onto the street.  Priceless.  Everyone in the bar witnessed this and enjoyed the comedic moment and no one enjoyed it more than me.

SATURDAY: The weather gods cooperated fully by bringing us spring-like weather, and as a result, there were a lot of folks out and about throughout the day.  With the college football season beginning to wind down, we're starting to see less and less pivotal games.  That makes for lighter daytime traffic for the bar until the college basketball season kicks in (which really starts tonight).

That being said, we still ended up with a pretty good night, between the large contingent of Baylor University Alumni turning out for their big football game vs Texas A&M, the usual contingent of Habs fans showing up to watch some NHL Hockey and a large influx of boxing fans hoping to see the Pacquiao/ Margarito fight (which we didn't carry). While there weren't any notable highlights from Saturday night, we did find a female leather jacket left behind at the end of the night.  When I went into her pocket hoping to find some sort of ID, I did pull out what looked like a set of miniature brass knuckles.  WTF?  I was later told that it wasn't in fact brass knuckles but a double ring, much like the old school rappers wore back in the day.  Interesting.  (The owner of the jacket showed up the next night and of course, I inquired about her "brass knuckles".  They were, in fact, NOT brass knuckles, but a double ring, just as my staff told me).

SUNDAY: Week 10 of BREW CREW SUNDAYS was a pretty chaotic (in a good way).  It all started out with the lively banter between members of DOLFANS NYC and the BREW CREW Regulars.  While the Miami Dolphins were taking it to the Tennessee Titans, the NY Jets were involved in a dogfight with the Cleveland Browns, the newly-minted "giant killers" of the NFL.  Dolphin fans, sensing another upset, began taunting the Brew Crew with the highly-creative "J-E-T-S Suck! Suck! Suck!" chant.  It was fun to see both ends of the bar going back and forth throughout the game.  Once the Dolphins game ended, all eyes turned to the end of the Jets/Browns game, which had ended in a tie and was about to go into overtime.

The overtime was riveting to watch and the Jets were able to eek out a hard-fought win, much to the delight of Jet fans and much to the dismay of yours truly (#1 Browns fan) and the Dolfans group, who were sorely hoping to see the Jets lose.  One drunken female Dolphins fan was so upset at the Jets win, she actually wanted to fight a bunch of girls who were cheering for the Jets.  Funny stuff.  While the loss crushed me personally, I can't get mad at the Jets; they got a gift from my team and they took advantage of it.  What can you do?  It was still a good game to watch.

While all of this was going on, it seems that the Corner Boys encountered a new character (possible member?) by the name of Elvis.  He's been in the bar a few times and he is indeed an "interesting" personality.  What made yesterday's visit by Elvis unique was the fact that someone remarked that he looks a lot like a young Ron Jeremy, the legendary porn star.  Now I don't know if I'd want to be compared to that, but he embraced the character and even took it as his own....

(Separated at birth):

Should I file this under "creepy"?

Ironically enough, this was the last photograph taken before my camera literally stopped working!  I guess I'll be making another visit to the camera store this week.

The bar was packed as usual and between the games and the usual hi-jinks between members of the Brew Crew, it was indeed a good afternoon.  Got to meet some new people through the blog and website, which is always an added bonus.  Anyone who's a fan of this blog is a friend of mine.  If you want to check out the rest of the pictures from the day, check out our FACEBOOK page.

It was a long and exhausting weekend, but a good one nevertheless.  This is shaping up to be another busy week as well, with college basketball kicking in full gear, Pub Trivia on Wednesday, another Thursday Night NFL game (Miami vs Chicago), UFC 123: Rampage vs Machida on Saturday night ($10 cover charge), and of course, my 2nd Annual T-Shirt party next Sunday (1pm).  I expect it to be a good week!

That's It.  That's All I Got.
