INVASION OF THE FACELESS PEOPLE

I can't help but notice the growing phenomenon of faceless people showing up at sporting events. Are they part of the "V" invasion (currently airing on ABC)? Regardless of their origin, they are pretty funny (though I think I remember these guys showing up during the Vancouver Olympics)...

Good stuff!

THE MATING DANCE BEGINS....

It's late Friday night; it's been raining off and on most of the night but it hasn't deterred the natives from coming out and blowing off steam.

The early part of night started out with yours truly having to step in from jump street and getting the bar back into some semblance of order. I kinda walked into a shit show for reason I rather not get into. Still sorting it out. Nevertheless, whenever my night starts out with me "in the weeds", it sets the wrong tone for me and I hate when that happens. However, once we got back on track, it was pretty much smooth sailing the rest of the way up to this point.

Hockey dominated the early part of the night as the NJ Devils faced off against the Flyers and there were plenty of Devils fans in attendance for that matchup; There were also a few fans in attendance for Pittsburgh/Ottawa and believe it or not, a small, enthusiastic group for the Blackhawks/Preds game. So we're continuing to do our part to bring quality hockey to the hardcore fan.

Lots of "small groups" in and out of the bar tonight, predominately girls, which is always nice (for me anyways). No creepy stories to report (then again, it's only 1am).

Had a "long day", starting with a hearing with the Board of Health early this morning. Hate going to those- I feel like we're going to get screwed with something, no matter what happens; going to a hearing is more about how much damage we can avoid from the judge as opposed to getting off scot-free (which never happens, by the way). We are usually pretty lucky when it comes to the Board of Health and its inspections, but I can't think of anyone who's ever come away from an inspection with a totally clean bill of health. In my opinion, it's a revenue-generator for the city, so they will get something out of you. It is what it is.

So coming back from the hearing, I was already in a bit of a mood; then having to walk into what I walked into during Happy Hour, it didn't help the situation, let's just say. But over time, things are coming together and everyone seems to be having a good time, which makes me feel better.

As we speak, the hook-ups are beginning to take place and I usually find this time of the night to be entertaining. So with that, I'm going to log off and get my entertainment on. Hope everyone have a good night/weekend!

GO HABS GO!

Tricolore jusqu' au bout!!!! ("Habs Until the End") That was the general feeling amongst the fans of the Canadiens after they pulled off an improbable 3-2 OT victory over the top-seeded Washington Capitals. The 8th seeded Canadiens were looked upon to have virtually no shot at making it past the first round against the powerful Capitals, however, they simply played their hearts out (shutting down mega star Alex Ovechkin in the process) and followed the early trend of the underdogs winning in the first round of the playoffs.

Speaking of underdogs, out of the first seven playoff games played, the favorites won only two of them (Vancouver and Buffalo). The underdogs (Phoenix, Montreal, Philadelphia, Colorado and Ottawa), surprised everyone by stealing Game 1 and making the playoffs that much more interesting. Tonight's schedule include the following:

7pm:
Pittsburgh vs Ottawa

7:30p
New Jersey vs Philadelphia

8:30pm
Chicago vs Nashville

10pm
Detroit vs Phoenix

10:30pm
Colorado vs San Jose

Add to that full slate of games, both the Yankees (vs Texas) and Mets (vs Cards) and we have a full night of sports, something for everyone!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST NIGHT..

Make sure you check out the website for the happenings/drink specials for the weekend!

Now I have to finish off the to-do list before work tonight, so I'm signing out (for now).

THE TAX MAN COMETH....

I found myself up earlier than usual this morning so I decided to go out and knock out as many things on my to-do list as possible. I have a busy night lined up at the bar so if I could get as much I can done early enough, that would give me a couple of hours to myself before tackling the activities of the night.

As I made my way around the borough, ticking off my to-do list, I couldn't help but to notice all of the stressed out faces all around me. At first I couldn't figure out why I was getting the stink eye from practically everyone who passed me. Finally, after overhearing a frantic phone call, it dawned on me: April 15th..... Tax Day.

This is the day that most Americans dread. Time to file with Uncle Sam. Most of us put off this task until the last minute and as a result, when that dreaded day comes, everyone is running around frantic, trying to get all of the paperwork together and sent out by the midnight deadline. I don't understand why we create such drama for ourselves. We all know when this stuff is due, and we have plenty of time to get it done. Yet we still procrastinate and procrastinate until the last minute, then make that mad dash to the accountant's office or the post office, trying to beat the deadline, as if we're trying to defuse a bomb with :03 seconds left on the clock. Crazy stuff. Well, here's hoping that everyone gets their taxes done on time and more importantly, that you get some moolah back from Uncle Sammy.

Last night's edition of Pub Trivia was a well-attended affair, with plenty of new faces. Many of the new faces were there to support our new bartender, Elisha and it was a good night for everyone as a result.

FIRE MARSHALL ED, newbie Elisha, SCUBA STEVE and DOOLEY DO-RIGHT getting their game plan together before Pub Trivia.

ON ANOTHER NOTE: One of our friends of the bar just got nominated for a "Webby Award" for a video he did on Matt Long's journey to run in a marathon. Support him by voting for his video (click on "Webby Award" link and vote for "26.2 or Die" in the Sports category)

TONIGHT
: "Thirsty Thursdays", featuring $4 domestic drafts (5-10pm). There is also a BROOKLYN PENNANT ALE Promotion tonight (8pm-10pm), featuring samples of the famous PENNANT ALE, giveaways, etc. Sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery!

More importantly, NHL PLAYOFFS continues tonight with three big matchups: MONTREAL vs WASHINGTON, BOSTON vs BUFFALO (7pm), and VANCOUVER vs LOS ANGELES (10pm)! $4 Molson Canadian drafts and Molson Golden/Labatt Blue bottles during ALL NHL PLAYOFF telecasts! I expect to see a strong showing from my fellow HABS fans!

HUMP DAY BLUES

So it's Wednesday and the weather's about as perfect as it could get for mid-April. Everyone's walking around in a good mood and of course, the eye candy is off the hook. Yet with all of this in place, I still feel frumpy. Why? It's Wednesday, affectionately known as "Hump Day". The toughest day of the week.

You know the deal: You're halfway through the work week and the weekend is nowhere in sight. Work is bogging you down and the stress levels are rising. All you want to do is get through the day so that you can say it's Thursday, which means the weekend is almost here. It's harder to do that on a Wednesday than on a Thursday, thus the term "Hump Day"; getting over that "hump" or "hill" so that you can coast your way towards the weekend and the fun and relaxation that comes with it.

That being said, even though I feel frumpy and a tad bit grumpy (I haven't had my coffee yet), I still have to bring my "A" game today. Part of my job is to set the mood at the bar so that folks can forget their "Hump Day Blues", unwind and have a good time, whether it be through our weekly Pub Trivia event or the drink specials, or in tonight's case, by checking out some playoff hockey.

So, at the end of the day, the bottom line is that I have to get over my "Hump Day Blues" to make sure that you get over yours. Not always the easy task. But I guess that's why I get the big bucks. Cheers!

OPENING DAY, PT. 2.

Today is the home opener for the NY Yankees. That means a long, drawn out ceremony where the World Series champions get their rings, honor everyone from the Mayor of NY, to all of the players, past and present, and God himself. So by the time the game actually starts, it's sundown.

That being said, I have to keep this post short so that I can prep the bar for the occasion. Yes, that means hot dogs, pretzels, and all of that good stuff. So if you're in the neighborhood and don't have a ticket for the game, please stop by, have a cold one and free hot dog. I promise you they will be good.

In the meantime, I want to wish a very happy birthday to my homeslice, AFRIKA BAMBATTA, who turns 49 today (just kidding, though I suspect his liver is about that age). We go all the way back to '92 and he is still the bane of my existence. God bless him. Enjoy the day though I suspect it will end with him under an empty bottle of Maker's Mark in some seedy underground spot, whereabouts unknown. So print out a picture of him and if you come across his carcass in your travels today, throw him in a cab and send him up to West 106th and Columbus Ave. He should be good from there.

More to come....

WHIRLWIND WEEKEND...

The past weekend felt like a blur, with so much going on in a small window of time. Plenty of ups and downs to go around and by the time all was said and done, I found myself wiped out.

FRIDAY night was a busy night at the bar, highlighted by the NY Rangers pivotal victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. This was a MUST WIN for the Blueshirts if they wanted any chance to make it into the playoffs. Going into the weekend, they had two games left, both against the Flyers and they had to win BOTH in order to gain a spot into the playoffs.

There was a spirited crowd at the bar, dominated by Rangers fans, watching the game with guarded optimism for a Blueshirt victory; We also got a visit from the Coors Light girls, who hosted a promo, highlighted by a Sean Avery jersey giveaway, much to the delight of NY Ranger fans in the house. And when the Rangers held on for a 4-3 victory, everyone in the bar (sans the few disgruntled Flyer fans), celebrated with confidence that the playoffs were within their grasp (more on that later).

That was followed by a birthday party for a guy named PJ; not sure if it was a surprise party or not but they had a pretty good group that showed up to celebrate and celebrate they did, all the way until last call. We ended up getting out at around 5am.. which sucked ass for me because....

SATURDAY was going to be a busy day for yours truly. Between running errands and prepping for UFC 112 (a rare early showing at 1pm) and then the ENERGIZER BUNNY'S wedding in L.I. later in the evening, I was running on fumes.

UFC 112 took place in Dubai, which explained the early start time and the bar was filled with hardcore UFC fans who were aware of the time change (we replayed it again at 10 pm for the casual fans). I find myself more and more intrigued by the phenomenon called the UFC. The popularity of it, the fans who flock to it, etc. It has definitely supplanted boxing as the popular pugilistic sport. They know how to market its stars and the sport itself. It's crazy but intoxicating at the same time.

The highlight of the day/night for me, however, was attending the wedding of Elizabeth Cippoletti (a.k.a. THE ENERGIZER BUNNY) and Ed Frankel. I met Liz a few years back when she stumbled into our bar with a couple of girlfriends one night. We struck up a conversation and over time, she went from being a good patron to becoming one of my very good friends. During that time, she went through her trials and tribulations of life as a city girl until meeting some guy name Ed. Well who knew that "some guy named Ed" would turn out to be a gem of a guy himself and the perfect match for her. I watch their relationship bloom to the point where it became obvious that marriage would be next step for them. And on Saturday night, they officially became Mr. and Mrs. Ed Frankel. It was a fun wedding (not surprised by that) and she looked adorable! I was honored to have been invited and wish them well. They are leaving for New Orleans today to do a couple of days of volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, then on to Mexico for their honeymoon. Cool stuff!

SUNDAY I found myself spending most of the day recovering from Fri/Sat. before heading into work later in the evening. By the time I arrived for the evening shift, the bad news had already come: The NY Rangers lost a heartbreaker to Philadelphia (in a shootout, no less) to be denied the last playoff spot in the NHL Playoffs. So their season came down to three players, three shots; a shootout. As a Montreal Canadiens fan, it was hard for me to feel bad for them as we barely made it in ourselves; as a businessman, however, that loss hurts a little as it would have been nice to have a New York team in the playoffs. (I guess you could count NJ Devils, but a Victoria's Secret bra gets more support than they do). That's the way the puck drops I reckon.

Overall, it was a great weekend; between all of the fun taking place at the bar, the great sporting events of the weekend (The Masters, NHL & NBA hoops and MLB baseball) and yours truly having his own fun for a change, it was good times all weekend long.

This week should be another busy one, with the Yanks home opener taking place tomorrow; NHL Playoffs kicking off on Wednesday, a couple of private parties sprinkled in here , so as long as the weather holds up, it should be a good one.

TONIGHT: BEER BINGO MONDAYS return to Third and Long, with OPIE CUNNINGHAM running the show, featuring $1 Bud/Bud Light, and Coors Light mugs, or $2 mugs, all other domestic drafts (Brooklyn Pennant Ale '55, Killian's Red, Sam Adams Boston Lager, Sam Adams Noble Pils, Abita Purple Haze, Yungling Lager, and Magic Hat #9). Not a bad way to start the week!

ALL THE MARBLES....

In a couple of minutes, the NY RANGERS and PHILADELPHIA FLYERS faceoff in an epic battle that ultimately decides who will earn the last playoff spot in the NHL Eastern Conference. Simply put, the winner is in and the loser goes home, only to ponder what happened and what could have been...

3pm faceoff! $2 mugs.... What more can I say? Hope to see you at the bar!
