SUPER-DUPER SUNDAY!

It's Super Bowl Weekend and the hype machine has already kicked into high gear.  Every sports channel you turn to, whether it be ESPN, NBC Sports Network, MSG, SNY, etc. the talk of the day is SUPER BOWL.  Between now and kickoff on Sunday night, this game will be covered from every conceivable angle.  And by kickoff, you will be totally sick of the game before the game even starts.

That being said, the game itself presents a compelling matchup between two well-coached teams.  I anticipate a lower-scoring Super Bowl game, and the outcome of the game will fall on TWO factors: 1) SF quarterback Colin Kapernick.  He is indeed the "X" factor leading up to the game.  Quite simply: Which Colin will we see on Sunday?  Will he produce another highlight-reel game like he did versus Green Bay?  Or will Baltimore's defense find a way to stifle his game and produce mistakes?  2) The kicking game.  In this game you have two kickers going in opposite directions.  Baltimore has a rookie kicker (Justin Tucker) who has been nothing short of phenomenal this season.  While David Akers of the 49ers just suffered through the worst season of his career, finishing in the bottom half of the league in kicking.  This will determine the outcome of the game.

So with that, here's my prediction:

BALTIMORE 24 SAN FRANCISCO 13.

Ray Lewis will end his career on a high note, thanking God, Jesus, Allah, The Dali Lama and anyone else who will listen.

SUPER BOWL WEEK.. LET THE MADNESS BEGIN!

It's Super Bowl Week and as the sports world descend on the city of New Orleans, get ready to hear report after report on anything remotely related to the Big Game between San Francisco and Baltimore. This will range from the obvious pieces (Brother vs Brother, Ray Lewis' final game, Colin Kapernick, etc.), to some feel good stories here and there and of course, the sublime (there's always a few odd stories that pop up during this time).

Then of course, there will be the crazy bets that exist for the Big Game.  With Las Vegas being the place where you can bet on almost anything, you can expect to see some far-fetched bets taking place before and during the Big Game.  There will be bets on things such as the coin-flip, whether or not there will be a safety; will there be a scoreless quarter; will a specific player score a touchdown or make an interception;  There is even a bet on the number of times Ray Lewis will mention "God/Lord" during a pre/post game interview (the over/under is currently 3 times).

My favorite exotic wager, however, is always the National Anthem bet, in which you have to guess whether or not the singer finishes the Anthem above/below a set time.  This year, the person with that task is Alicia Keys, and the time to match is 2 minutes, 15 seconds. Now doll baby can be a bit long-winded at times when she sings, so this is an interesting bet to say the least.  Check out some the other odd Super Bowl Prop Bets HERE...

In any case, even though there won't be any local teams involved in this year's BIG GAME, the matchup is still intriguing enough to make you want to watch the game.  And for that reason we're expecting a good crowd for the game on Sunday.  Kickoff is a little after six pm, but we expect the bar to start filling up before then.

ANOTHER ONE FOR THE AGES...

My apologies for the late post; I'm still trying to recover from a long, yet fun day. Yesterday's Super Bowl proved to be one of the more memorable games in recent Super Bowl history. What was predicted to be a sure blow-out victory for the Pittsburgh Steelers turned into a nail-biting thriller that the favored Steelers were lucky to win. The whole day was filled with anticipation and bravado as fans of both teams tried to stake a claim for victory for their respective teams.

The party itself was a success as members of the SUNDAY BREW CREW went out in predictable style, with tons of funny moments, PLENTY of gentleman's drinks, a cornucopia of food to choose from, lots of playful flirtations going on (yeah, I see things folks) and a great game to boot.

Some moments that stand out include:

*DIRTY SANCHEZ playing the dutiful boyfriend by safeguarding tables for his girlfriend and her "hot" entourage of friends. He ended up guarding the tables for over three hours, much to the chagrin of all of his mates. For that, he got the "Ball and Chain" Apple Martini Award.


*The neighborhood's most EXPENSIVE calzone. T-BILL and NAPOLEON DYNAMITE decided that they were pretty hungry so instead of waiting for the FREE halftime buffet, they figured that they would order a calzone to tide them over. So after looking over the various menus we have on file, they decided to order one from PATSY'S down the street. After a few minutes, their delivery came as well as the bill...

Yes, the bill for TWO calzones came out to $43.00!

And the sad part? It wasn't even that great. Ouch.

*NAPOLEON DYNAMITE. This guy was just a sight to behold throughout the course of the afternoon. From the moment he arrived at 12:23pm to the moment his beloved Steelers eked out a hard-fought victory and he began shedding tears like the poor fat guy from Deliverance, he had everyone in hysterics. I'm only kicking myself for not having my camera on "Video" mode to capture all of his antics. Check out the timeline:

Talk about the "Decline of Western Civilization" as we know it....

There were a lot of people in attendance, and more importantly (at least to me), a lot of chicks. They seem to come out of the woodwork during Super Bowl time, which is fine with me. There were also a fair amount of tourists who were there, more out of curiosity than anything and that added to the fun.

Nothing like getting a visit from some of my favorite former students!

And so it goes. Overall it was a great experience and as always, a fitting end to a great football season. Now that it's over, we move on to the "official" winter sports season, and upcoming events like the annual "Anti-Valentine's Day Bash" (2/14), Fat Tuesday (2/24), March Madness (early March), the Elephant Parade Party (mid-March) and of course, St. Patrick's Day.
