HOLY HAILSTORM BATMAN!

Has 2010 been the year of bizarre weather or what?  Between the record-breaking summer of hell, the sudden tornado streak and then last night's crazy hailstorm from hell, I feel like we are living out a scene from the Old Testament. And to add to the luxury of the moment, the weather pundits are calling for a Nor'easter for this Thursday night.  Great. That's all we need.

The crazy storm didn't stop the NY Jets from pulling out a thrilling 28-20 victory over Brett Farve and the Minnesota Vikings.  The fans didn't seem to mind, even when Minnesota made a valiant comeback near the end of the game to make things interesting.  As long as their Jets came away with a victory, it was worth sitting out in the rain until after midnight. Next up for the J-E-T-S: Denver Broncos.

Speaking of which, join us this Sunday for our popular "BREW CREW SUNDAYS"; During the Jets/Broncos game we will be hosting a taping of SNY's popular game show "BEER MONEY", with Chris Carlin.  Here's a chance to show off your sports knowledge and if you get lucky, you'll win enough money to pay off your bar tab!

QUEST FOR 1,000!

As many of you may know by now, we've established a pretty nice group of fans on our FACEBOOK page. Recently I noticed that we're hovering around 900 fans on our FB page and this thought crossed my mind: what if we broke 1,000 fans? I know some of the bigger establishments out there can crack 1,000 fans easy, but for an intimate little bar like ours? 1,000 Facebook fans would be kinda cool.

That being said, I'm putting it out there- can you help me recruit some new fans so that we can break that 1,000 plateau? We're only 100 fans away from achieving that mark. WE SURVIVED!

After a brutal two days of 90+ degree humid hell, I am proud to say that our AC (and us) survived everything that Mother Nature threw at us. With capacity crowds on both Monday and Tuesday night, everyone was relatively comfortable and as a result, had a good time. Both nights ended later than normal, which for an early night of the week, is always a good thing.

Today's weather calls for a bit of a reprieve: 85 degrees and scattered showers. Oh well. I'll take whatever I can get these days.

PUB TRIVIA TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS kicks off tonight! After weeks of competition, we're down to the Final Eight teams as they go head-to-head for the coveted "Trivia Cup" and all of the spoils that goes along with it. The tournament begins tonight with the champions being crowned next Wednesday. For those of you who didn't make the tournament, never fear: you can play along as well and still be eligible for cool prizes! Registration, as always, begins at 7pm, with the madness beginning just after 8pm! The competition should be fierce as the teams involved are pretty intense when it comes to trivia. Should make for a fun night.

The NY YANKEES play a matinee game vs Toronto this afternoon (12 noon), followed by NY METS vs Arizona (3:30pm) and a WORLD CUP qualifier match between MEXICO and the U.S. (4pm). If you're around for that, stop by and help me cheer the U.S. on.

A PLEA FOR HELP: For months now we've been trying to "prod" our dear friend BABY GIRL to embrace the not-so-new millennium by joining Facebook. Now she has indicated that if I get 100 people to join our FB group "Search Party for Lee Ann Frahm", then she would finally give in and join FB. So if you're on Facebook already, join our group and let's bring our dear friend closer to modern technology and the joys that come with it!

Talk About Small World....

In the past I've written about the virtues of FACEBOOK, (better known as the best thing since.....well, me). It's easy to use, great utility tool to meet up with folks, set up gatherings or locate long lost friends. It's especially great for the latter, as I recently found out first hand.

Locating friends on FACEBOOK is a lot like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon; You come across one person who turns out to be friends with someone you used to know way back when, and so on and so on. The roundabout connections are fascinating. I've also been able to re-connect with long lost friends from college and in some cases high school. One connection in particular was interesting. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio I had a lot of friends that ran in various circles. Public school friends, private school friends, work friends, friends from the local Y, etc.

Out of all of those people, I was a part of a close-knit crew of three; we met in high school and hit it off instantly. Now I went to a very small, private high school in Cleveland Heights (Lutheran East H.S.), a subarb of Cleveland. It was so small, that my senior class had 25 people in it (the school had 125 overall that year). There was Greg (the athlete), Terrance (the intellectual), and me (clown/party animal). We were thick as thieves and always looked out for one another.

As things turned out, after graduation, we all went our seperate ways, following our own paths. Somehow we ended up losing touch with one another over the years and from time to time I'd think about them and wonder what they were up to.

Then FACEBOOK came along and lo and behold: the connections were remade! Ironically enough, one of the crew of three, Terrance, is now living here in NYC of all places! He went to college in Georgia and became a much respected expert in music and now hosts his own radio show here in NYC. Talk about a small world! I haven't seen the guy in over twenty years and now he lives less than twenty minutes away! We plan on getting together in the near future to catch up on old times and I thank FACEBOOK for making that happen. (by the way, you can catch my friend's show HERE)

Granted, I still get that occasional friend request from that person that I simply don't remember or didn't care for in the past, but those are few and far between, compared to all of the great relationships I've been able to reconnect with.

MORE RENOVATIONS, FACEBOOK AND BROTHER JIMMY'S

Before going to bed, I figured I better pop in an entry now because Thursday figures to be a very busy day at the ranch. With renovations headed down the home stretch, the place will be flush with activity starting very early in the morning.

RENOVATIONS

One thing I have to say about all of the renovations, it's really thrown my sleeping patterns into a loop. It's bad enough that I'm used to going to bed at around 5am. Now I find myself home most nights by 9-10pm and after a light meal, ready to fall asleep almost immediately. You'd think that would allow for much-needed hours of sleep, right? WRONG. It seems that I am so used to being awake that I find myself sleeping LESS than before the renovations started. I'll fall asleep for maybe 1-2 hours, then wired and wide awake for most of the night, until my body falls into its normal pattern at around 5am.

Then with contractors arriving early in the morning to start their work (8-9am on most days), that means that I have to be up to let them in. Then the whole day starts all over again. Brutal.

The good news is that the light is at the end of the tunnel- we're almost there. Yay. Maybe I can finally get some real sleep!


FACEBOOK

It seems that my Facebook account has been blowing up with activity lately. I've gotten re-connected with former students, former college classmates and even a great buddy from high school! While I'm totally digging the concept that Facebook presents (more so than MySpace), eventually one negative aspect has to happen sooner or later: "What do you do when someone you didn't like in the past requests to be your friend?"

I'm sure all of you Facebook members have faced this dilemma yourselves at one point in time. I'm finding myself having to deal with this more and more. Some individuals I simply put on ignore- I dug through my mental rolodex and found that we never really connected back in the day or we just didn't like each other. But then what do you do with the ones with whom you don't remember that well? "Did you leave on good terms?" "Do you really know this person?" "Was this a past hook-up?" Questions like these begin zipping through your brain while you hesitate pressing the "Accept" button. Now this has become a stressful moment and Facebook wasn't meant to be a stressful activity. Or was it? What to do, what to do.


BROTHER JIMMY'S

It looks like Murray Hill has gotten even more crowded with the addition of NYC stalwart, BROTHER JIMMY'S BBQ. An Upper East Side staple for many years, this honkey-tonk, ACC-lovin' bar/restaurant has found itself spreading its wings past few years. It has recently opened up in Grand Central Terminal, near Madison Square Garden, and now, here in Murray Hill. I find myself checking out the new outpost tonight (Thursday) as I've been invited to participate in the ESPN Radio FANTASY FOOTBALL DRAFT PARTY. Apparently I will be drafting a fantasy football team with 99 other lucky participants with the hopes of fielding a team strong enough to get me a trip to the SUPER BOWL!

Not sure what I am looking forward to more: A chance at winning a trip to the Big Game, meeting some ex-football players and ESPN personalities, or the open bar. Hmmmmm.....


Gotta take time to thank MR. LOW-KEY for plying me with grub this week- it's keeping me from blowing cash at the take-out while the bar's closed for renovations. Though I am totally convinced that he's using me as a cullinary guinea pig, I ain't complaining. Giddy-up!
