IT'S HOT. NO SERIOUSLY... IT'S HOT.

In my previous post I warned everyone about the upcoming heatwave.  Well folks, it's here.  And it's brutal.  Put it this way- you know you're in a heatwave when you find yourself sweating within five minutes of stepping out of the shower.  It's that hot.

Usually when we have one of these heatwaves, I immediately begin to panic.  Will the AC handle this heat?  Will our ice machine break down? All kinds of weird things tend to happen when we encounter a heatwave.  And that's just at the bar- I'm not even counting how weather like this make folks wacky. Then again, here's one positive aspect of a heatwave:

(Courtesy: NY Daily News)

I am happy to report, however, that we are holding up nicely (so far).  Our AC system had its maintenance checkup just before the heatwave hit, and it's pumping out cold air nicely.  Ice machine's cranking out cubes like a champ.  Everything's working up to snuff and I couldn't be happier.  And more importantly, my patrons couldn't be happier.

So, hang in there folks,   just a couple more days of this oppressive heat and Mother Nature should cut us a break.  In the meantime, drink plenty of fluids, wear light clothing and if you can't stand being in your hot apartment, you know where to go!  We'll keep a couple of cold ones on ice for ya!

TONIGHT: "Weekend Kick-Off Happy Hour" (5pm-9pm).  Start your weekend off on the right foot with $4 domestic drafts, well drinks or sangria!  A perfect alternative to sitting in Hamptons/Jersey Shore traffic.  Look forward to having you!

Cheers!

GEAR UP FOR A HEATWAVE....

If you spent any time in the area during the Memorial Day Weekend, you were no doubt disappointed with the weather.  Between the thunderstorms and the chilly temps, it felt like the end of Summer as opposed to the start of it.

Well, that's going to change quickly starting today as temps will soar into the 80's and even the 90's through the rest of the week.  So get your summer gear ready, cause you're going to need it.  We're ready on our end, just having our AC unit tuned up last week.  We should be all set on our end.

As for summer beverages, we've rolled out our popular Abita Strawberry Wheat, Leinenkugel Summer Shandy and Berry Weiss, perfect for quenching that thirst on that hot Summer day.  We've also brought back our famous Twizzle Tea (Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka & Lemonade) for those of you who rather stay away from the beers.  And don't forget our "Thirsty Thursdays", where you can enjoy a special deal on red/white sangria.

The NY Rangers were eliminated over the holiday weekend and as a result, all of our local teams are now out of playoff contention.  As sad as that was to see, it's been a great post-season at the bar, with good crowds on hand to cheer on not only the locals, but for various other playoff teams still in contention.

As the NBA & NHL reach their final stages of their championship run, we will continue to highlight all of the games leading to the NBA Championship and the Stanley Cup.

TONIGHT: GAME 7- Detroit Red Wings vs Chicago Blackhawks (7pm), with the winner moving on to face the L.A. Kings in the NHL Western Conference Finals.  The Subway Series also changes venues, as the NY Yankees and NY Mets continue their big series at Yankee Stadium.  It's also PUB TRIVIA NIGHT (8pm).  As always, it's free to play, with a $45 bar tab up for grabs for the winning team!  Get here early as prime seating gets snapped up quickly!

So it's a fun-filled night on tap, with something for everyone!  Look forward to seeing everyone!

Cheers!

IT'S A GOLD BOND DAY....

Well, we can't say we weren't warned.  The weather mavens kept telling us to be prepared for this heatwave and for once, they were right.  It is ridiculously HOT in NYC right now.  As of 12:22 pm it is currently 91 degrees in midtown Manhattan and they are calling for the Big Apple to bake to a toasty 98 degrees (with a "real-feel" of 110 degrees). Say whut???

That being said, please, PLEASE use common sense folks when you venture out into the heat.  For starters, make sure you take a shower and PUT ON DEODORANT!  When you are in a big city like NYC and you have to make use of public transportation, those buses and subways are usually pretty crowded and on a sweltering hot day like today, the last thing you want to deal with is a straphanger with a bad case of the funky pits.  And while you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to rock some Gold Bond powder to keep things "fresh".  You'll be happy and more importantly, so will everyone around you!

On a day like today, you will also come across some questionable outfits.  I know you're going to want to be comfortable and at the end of the day, comfort is the most important thing on days like these.  But please, PLEASE, make sure you double-check yourself in the mirror and ask yourself should you be wearing that outfit.  If it takes you more than 10 seconds to answer that question, you may want to change.  I'm just going to leave it like that.  When you see some "odd outfits" on your trek to work or lunch, you'll see what I mean.

Most importantly, keep yourself hydrated (water, no caffeine) and exercise patience.  It's hot days like these that cause tempers to flare and crankiness levels to rise.  We only have one more day of this so endure the best way you can and stay cool!

Speaking of HEAT, the MIAMI HEAT will be looking to close out the OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER tonight to clinch the NBA Championship.  Will LeBron James finally get his ring? Or will the   Thunder find a way to get the series back to Oklahoma City?  Watch the game tonight (w/audio) and find out!  Enjoy $4 Bud/Bud Light/Coors Light and Sangria during the game!

Cheers !

BREAKING THE (heat) WAVES....

So far, our "unofficial summer" has been a scorcher.  With high temps and brutal humidity bearing down on us, especially over the holiday weekend , this week has been a royal pain in the arse, if you know what I mean.  Of course, when the weather becomes unbearable, strange things begin to happen.  Whether it be  the beer box or the air conditioner acting up (the two things you need to work on days like these), you can always count on Murphy's Law to kick in.  Thankfully, we're due for a break by the time the weekend arrives, with more tolerable weather to enjoy.

Speaking of "Heat Waves", there is a subject that comes up every so often here in NYC, and that is the topic of topless women in pubic places.  Recently there's been a spike of the number of women walking the streets of the Big Apple topless, enjoying the hot summer rays.  Now in a city where practically nothing shakes the average New Yorker, this has caused more than its fair share of confusion.  Who are these women who dare bare their breasts in public?  Is that legal?  Why aren't they being arrested?

Courtesy of NYC.BarstoolSports.com

Fact of the matter is that it IS legal for females to go topless in public in NY State.  And so every so often, you'll see the random female exercising her right to bare it all (up top), ..... because she can.   Read more on this fascinating story HERE.  And in the meantime, if you happen to come across a young lady walking about, sans top, remember guys.. "eyes up here".  :)

KINGS vs DEVILS, Game 1: The L.A. Kings continued their road domination, stealing an OT win from the NJ Devils in the opening game of the Stanley Cup.  Both teams were tentative, feeling each other out for a few periods before finally opening things up in the 3rd period and in overtime.  Now some NJ Devils fans are already in panic mode, while some Kings fans are already lifting The Cup.  Settle down, folks.  I get the feeling that it's going to be a long series.  Buckle up!

Game 2 this Saturday at The Rock! (8pm)

On a separate note, we tip our cap to Detroit Red Wings defenseman, NICKLAS LIDSTROM, who hung up his skates today after 20 years.  During his storied career, he was an 11-time All Star, won 7 Norris Trophies (Best Defenseman) and 4 Stanley Cups.  He will no doubt be a 1st ballot Hall of Famer and he will be missed, not only by the Detroit Red Wings, but by the NHL and hardcore hockey fans everywhere.

TONIGHT: PUB TRIVIA returns to Third and Long with another fun-filled edition!  As always, it's free to play, with a $45 bar tab up for grabs to the winning team!  Great drink specials available ($20 Coors Light buckets and $4 Mixed Well Drinks for ladies, 7pm-11pm)!  Get here early and get ready for a full night of "Good, Pouring Fun"!

Cheers!

YOU KNOW IT'S BAD WHEN.....

You wake up at five a.m. to do a blog post and it's 79 degrees outside! That's a bad sign of things to come. At least the AC held up to scrutiny for last night's BEER BINGO; Here's keeping the fingers crossed that it makes it through DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS. It always seems that the hottest weather falls on DOLLAR DRAFT TUESDAYS. I guess we'll see what happens tonight.

FYI: We're having a FACEBOOK Party next Thursday to thank the Third and Long fans of Facebook for all of their support over the years. Specific drink specials (for FB fans only) and live music all night long! If you haven't signed up to be a FB Fan of Third and Long yet, don't forget to do so, then RSVP on Facebook (check out the link on the right)!

Too hot to blog anymore. Stay cool New York.

SAPPING THE STRENGTH....

This recent heatwave has taken its toll on me like you wouldn't believe. Six consecutive days of 90+ temps with maximum humidity has taken its toll on yours truly. It was so brutally hot yesterday that I literally did nothing but sleep under the AC until about 6pm (I am dreading the day the Con Ed bill comes).

The heatwave also affected our business over the weekend as the masses took to the ocean shores to cool off. Foot traffic was WAY off as the only ones who were brave (or stupid) enough to stay in the city were tourists and those B & T folks who didn't have a shore house to go to.

My weather girl HEIDI JONES is predicting yet a few more days of blistering heat, peppered with some thundershowers before we get a bit of relief towards the end of week. I hope she's right, cause a brotha can't take feeling like a runaway slave anymore with this oppressive heat.

BREAK OUT THE NUPTIALS

This weekend marks a special occasion among the BREW CREW set as two of our own set to tie the knot. Yes, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE and SMURFETTE will exchange their vows this weekend, thus officially ending Mr. Dynamite's tenure as a single cad. No one ever thought we'd see the day that someone would come along and tame this "wilderbeast" of a man, but SMURFETTE has done just that. Several members of the BREW CREW will be in attendance including yours truly, ANGEL, SUSHI SAMBA, SILENT BOB and BETTY BOOP, just to name a few. It should be an interesting (and fun) occasion! We wish them nothing but the best.

UPCOMING EVENTS: MONDAY: "Mug Nite Madness" (4pm-close). $2.00 Domestic Draft mugs (Coors Light, Yuengling, Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, Sam Adams Summer Ale, Brooklyn Pennant Ale) or $1.00 Bud/Bud Light, ALL NIGHT LONG!!! Here's your chance to check out our different domestic drafts!

TUESDAY: "Dollar Draft Madness" (4pm - close). $1.00 Bud/Bud Light drafts ALL NIGHT LONG.

WEDNESDAY: "Ladies Night" with $3.00 Mixed Well Drinks (for all ladies), $5.00 imported beers, Cosmos and Appletinis, ALL NIGHT LONG!

THURSDAY: "Bucket O'Lights" (4pm-10pm), with buckets of Miller Lite, Michelob Lights or Coors Lights, 5/$15.00!

FRIDAY: "Weekend Kick-Off" (5pm-10pm), $4.00 Mixed Well Drinks and Draft Beers!

SATURDAY: "Kick the Keg" Saturday (12noon - 10pm), $2.00 mugs, ALL BEERS ON TAP!

Don't forget to check out our "Wi-Fi" and keep us in mind when you want to book your Fantasy Football Drafts! Speaking of which: 3 more weeks before EPL soccer kicks off- 6 more weeks before NFL Opening weekend!!

More to come!

TALK ABOUT BOUNCING BACK!

The running theme for the day is "Bouncing Back". The title seems appropriate for a number of reasons. For starters, thanks to the continued support of the loyal readers of the blog, THIRD and LONG has regained the lead in the voting for "AOL's Best Sports Bar in NYC" (over ESPN Zone). The tally now stands as follows (as of 5am today):

THIRD and LONG (34%)

ESPN ZONE (32%)

40/40 CLUB (15%)

With three days of voting left, anything can happen- so keep voting and push us over the top!!! Just click on the logo AOL logo (over to the right---->) and make the improbable happen!

Back to the theme of the day, "Bouncing Back" also applies to MUG NIGHT MONDAYS, as we got a better-than expected crowd for a post-holiday weekend. Normally after a long holiday weekend, we get the post-holiday blues for the next few days as everyone tries to recover from partying hard and spending lots of cash. I guess folks dug in-between the sofa pillows for extra change to pay for a few mugs of cold ones, because we had a pretty good night.

And "Bouncing Back" applies again, this time to today's weather as the oppressive heatwave returns to our fair city. Though my favorite weather girl, HEIDI JONES keeps predicting thunderstorms for today, it's a safe bet that it won't break the heatwave that's expected to top out in the 90's. Of course, that means pray that the AC handles the workload. We just got it tuned up last week so we should be okay, but you never know....
Just be prepared because it's going to be a scorcher today.

On a sad note, I am disheartened to say that things are bad in the land of AMERICA'S TEAM, the Cleveland Indians. Due to injuries to key players, underachieving performers and the lot, my favorite baseball team has in effect, raised the white flag on the season. This was "unofficially" signaled by the sale of their top pitcher and reigning Cy Young pitcher, C.C. SABATHIA to Milwaukee for a group of top prospects and a bag of baseballs. To make matters worse, AMERICA'S TEAM, who was one win away from going to the World Series last year, is mired in last place in the A.L. Central. Unheard of. Makes me sick to my stomach to even think about.

DOLLAR DRAFT MADNESS TONIGHT with $1.00 Bud/Bud Light mugs, ALL NIGHT LONG, with BABY GIRL and FRENCHY working behind the stick! Swing by and get a cold one- trust me, after the hot day we're expected to have, you're going to need it!

More updates later!

HOLY HEATWAVE, PT. II

It's 12:45am and as I write this, it's still 86 degrees outside. Hot, humid and funky. What a way to enjoy a Monday night. According to my weather goddess, HEIDI JONES, we will have to endure near 100-degree weather for one more day before we are hit with a deluge of rain that will break the heatwave. I only pray that our air conditioning system holds up until then.

CHEAP INTERNS RULE THE NIGHT

I stopped in a short while ago to check in with the staff and to see how things were going. It was obvious that the night was a good one: plenty of beer mugs all over the place; cluster of small groups engrossed in conversation and music, having a good time. The majority of the crowd that was still there when I arrived were definitely interns. Some of them were still wearing temporary ID cards on their chests.

As I hung out at the bar, talking with FIRE MARSHALL ED, I couldn't help but to notice during the few transactions that took place that none of the big time spenders were leaving any tips. One group in particular would stroll up to the bar, order a fist full of mugs, pay for their bounty, and simply tuck away their change- with no thought whatsoever to leaving a tip. What's up with that?? It was bad enough that they didn't even bother to think about leaving a tip- what made it worse was some of the attitudes these kids had. As if they were doing you a favor. Where do they think they are? England??? Talk about nerve.

THANKS, DEE DEE....

During the course of the recent NHL Playoffs, I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of great hockey fans. One fan in particular was a young lady by the name of DEE DEE. She was a diehard Detroit Red Wings fan, from Detroit who was not only cute, but knew her hockey too (a very nice combination, I must say). She came by the bar for every Red Wings game, sat in her same seat each time and never complained the few times we didn't have the sound on for a game.

Saturday night I found myself working as a last-minute replacement for FIRE-MARSHALL ED (he got called away for duty). While in the middle of a conversation with another employee, imagine my surprise when this hot chick came walking through the bar with a small bag in her hand. It was DEE DEE. She caught me off guard because quite frankly, I've never seen her without her Red Wings jersey before. She turned out to be hotter that I thought.

DEE DEE walked over to me and presented me with the small bag. She said it was a token of gratitude for us being so nice to her and her friends during the hockey playoffs. To be honest, I was quite taken aback by the gesture. It's not very often that a patron would go out of their way do that for me. It was a nice feeling, I have to admit.

EURO 2008 UPDATE:

Monday saw our first upset of the tournament as the pesky Dutch squad of the Netherlands decided to put aside their differences to put on a masterclass display on the favored Azzurri of Italy, trouncing them 3-0. It wasn't even close. The Italians are probably wailing in the streets of Rome as we speak.

The other match featured Le Bleus of France and Romania, the "weakest" team in this group, otherwise known as the Group of Death. That match, on the other hand, was a bit of a snooze-fest, as each team played tentative soccer, resulting in a 0-0 tie. Whoopie.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE:

Spain vs Russia (12 noon)

Greece vs Sweden (2:45pm).

$4.00 Carlsberg Drafts during the matches!!!

That's it for now. I'll be working the day shift tomorrow, so you won't catch me online. Try to stay cool and if you are around during the afternoon, stop in and say hello!

Dollar Draft Madness tonight!!! ($1.00 Bud/Bud Light MUGS)
